I regret to inform the Oppo-World (and admit to myself) that I have to sell my B6. I really don’t want to, but it’s in the best interest of the family at this point. My goal is to spend $3K max on a wagon or SUV that (1) looks good (2) is reliable and (3) doesn’t have rust issues. I already know the typical choices: Subaru, Protege5, Volvo, etc. however - I have some strict needs that I worry are unrealistic. I need leather (we have two giant shedding dogs), no sludge issues (Saab wagons), and I want something that is not an Aztec or a ‘96 Camry wagon. Keeping in mind that the Minnesota market is very limited - any insights on the best risk/reward wagon or SUV would be super helpful. Love you all - happy Friday!

The 01-04 V40 would be a great choice, probably the best way to meet your needs. Should be attainable for 3k, reasonable reliability, looks awesome, and most of them have leather.
Also, the Matrix/Vibe was available with leather from 05-on. Not sure what kind of prices they command, though. What’s wrong with a 96 Camry wagon? They’re awesome and have a third seat and TWO rear wipers!!!!!!!
This one might get a lot of hate, but the PT Cruiser.
If you’re lucky, you’ll find a Focus wagon with leather. If not, there’s the slightly smaller ZX5.
You might also want to look at the Mazda 5 and Kia Rondo.
How about a Quest?
As far as unrealistic, no comment there since I don’t know the Minnesota car market.

Stay away from Mazdas if you’re trying to avoid rust.

If I recall it was the first car to do the “navigation screen in gauge” thing.

I’ve lived in MI, IN, or OH my whole life and I’ve never seen rust like this on any Mazda. Half the old Protege5s here are rusted through over the rear wheels and one or two early BK 3s have some bubbling around the rear wheels and on the hatch.

The 3.5 V6 is a really solid motor, Ive never heard of major issues with it, but also check out lxforums.com and read through for a while. I have an 05 RT with the 5.7 and I have no rust underneath, and its a NJ car for most of its life. I DD the car now with no immediate signs of that changing either.
There are very minor electronic issues, some gauges stick occasionally, but you can get a replacement cluster or have it repaired for honestly not too much.
The AWD is a very durable setup as well, I dont hear about too many issues with it though I have RWD only.
Bushings are common issues because the car is on the heavier side, but theres lots of options for changing that. No car is 100% problem free, but if youre careful and treat it right, a Magnum is a fantastic choice. The fact that youre able to find one available is impressive too, many people with them arent giving them up.
